Hi everyone, and welcome to “Breastfeeding with Jenny.” I’m so excited you’re here. Whether you’re a first-time mom or just looking for new tips and encouragement, this space is for you. Today, we’ll talk about all things breastfeeding—my favorite tips, how to get comfortable with pumping, and everything in between.
Let me start by sharing a bit of my own story. Like many moms, I didn’t have a smooth start. Breastfeeding was hard. I struggled with latching, felt frustrated at times, and worried constantly about whether my baby was getting enough. But I promise, with patience and a little guidance, things do get better. You are not alone in this.
Breastfeeding offers so many benefits for both baby and mom. It helps build your baby’s immune system, creates a beautiful bond, and even helps your body recover after birth. Still, it’s important to remember that every journey is different. Whether you breastfeed for one week or one year—or not at all—you’re doing what’s best for your family.
Creating a comfortable space to nurse or pump can make such a big difference. I recommend finding a quiet spot, adding a cozy chair or cushion, and keeping water and snacks nearby. A relaxed environment not only helps you feel better, but it can also help your milk flow more easily.
Latching can be tricky in the beginning. It shouldn’t hurt—if it does, baby might not be latched deeply enough. Try to make sure their mouth covers more than just the nipple, and experiment with positions until you find what feels right. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a lactation consultant—they are magical helpers!
Let’s dive into pumping! Whether you’re returning to work, sharing feeding duties, or just building a stash, learning to pump is so empowering. In the video portion of this post, I’ll show you exactly how I use my pump, clean the parts, and safely store my milk. It’s easier than it looks, I promise.
Choosing the right breast pump is all about what works for you. There are so many options—manual, electric, wearable—and it can get overwhelming. I personally love using one that’s quiet and compact, especially when I’m multitasking. Think about how often you’ll pump, and where, when deciding what kind to get.
Pumping on a schedule can help maintain your supply and keep things predictable. If you’re exclusively pumping, aim for several sessions throughout the day, especially in those early months. If you’re nursing and pumping, try pumping after feedings or in the morning when supply tends to be higher.
Once you’ve pumped, storing your milk properly is super important. Label everything with the date, use clean bags or bottles, and follow general guidelines: a few hours at room temperature, a few days in the fridge, and several months in the freezer. I also recommend keeping a little log of how much you’re pumping—it’s encouraging to see your stash grow.
And finally, I just want to remind you: you’re doing great. Breastfeeding and pumping are acts of love and patience. Some days will feel tough, but each drop of milk, each moment spent nurturing your baby, is enough. Be kind to yourself, reach out for support when you need it, and know that I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
